Speeds varied from 80 on the pavement to 35 on gravel roads. RPM was typically 4500-5500. Seat was never uncomfortable. Yours is a 15, right?

Both would be fine for long highway trips and offroading. The 1290 better for the former and the 890 better for the latter. I've rode to Banff, from OR to TN, and done most of the WA, OR, and MABDRs on my 1290 SAR and had no real wants of a lighter bike other than the fact that it'd obviously make it easier.
